Egypt has called for sustainable and predictable financing to strengthen Africa's preparedness for epidemics, while urging the continent to play a greater role in shaping the future of the global health system. Health and Population Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar made the call as co-chair of the African High-Level Ministerial Committee on Global Health Architecture Reform. Egypt said the measures are needed to improve the continent's ability to respond to disease outbreaks.

The health ministry statement did not detail specific funding amounts or mechanisms being proposed. It also did not specify which aspects of the global health architecture Egypt wanted reformed or which regional institutions it believed should take on new responsibilities.

The call comes as African nations have sought greater influence in international health governance, particularly following the coronavirus pandemic.
