Who we are

Middle East Affairs is an English-language newsroom covering the Middle East and the wider Arab world — the politics, conflict, diplomacy, economies and societies of the region — for readers in Europe and North America.

We start from the region's own press. Our Middle East and Arab World desks are sourced from Arabic-language outlets across the Levant, the Gulf, Egypt and the Maghreb, alongside the region's English-language publications. The world, science, health and technology sections draw on international sources, because their news is international.

Why we start with Arabic sources

Most English-language coverage of the Arab world is written at a distance from it. Reporting that begins with what the region's own newspapers, agencies and broadcasters are saying gives a reader in London or Chicago a different and better-founded picture — one closer to the argument as it is actually being had.

Starting there is not the same as taking it at face value. Every outlet we draw on has its own politics, and we record where each story came from.

How our stories are made

We work from sourced material: news agencies, official sites, and reporting that can be checked. The source of each story is recorded in our editorial system, and we will give it on request.

We use AI tools at the drafting and translation stage. Those tools publish nothing. Every story enters a review queue and goes live only after an editor approves it individually.

We do not publish stories without human review.
