A man in his 30s was lightly wounded in a stabbing near the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem's Old City early Friday morning, according to United Hatzalah, an Israeli emergency medical service. He was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center for treatment.

Israel Police said officers stationed in the area shot the assailant after he approached security personnel nearby. The police did not provide further details on the suspect's condition or identity.

The incident occurred hours after more than 50,000 people had gathered at the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest prayer site, for selichot prayers late Thursday night.
