Palestinian residents traveling between towns in the northern West Bank have begun encountering hundreds of Israeli flags lining main roads connecting Jenin and Nablus. The flags have appeared with increasing frequency over the past three months, according to residents and local documentation groups.
Taghreed Yahya, 25, who commutes from the village of Kafr Rai near Jenin, told Al-Jazeera that witnessing the gradual transformation of familiar landscapes was painful. "Flag by flag, outpost by outpost, new road by new road, the familiar scene changes, which naturally creates sadness, anger and fear, along with a sense of powerlessness," she said.
The flag deployment coincides with an acceleration in settlement expansion. On Tuesday, as residents of the village of Arabeh, south of Jenin, were uprooting olive trees from their land, groups of settlers hung Israeli flags along a road known as the "bypass route" in the area northeast of the city. Israeli military vehicles had entered the region earlier to facilitate settler access to the site.
The Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission in Jenin said that in three months, the volume of demolished Palestinian structures in the province matched demolitions in Nablus and Salfit provinces over ten years. Israeli authorities approved 113 structural plans for expanding existing settlements or establishing new ones in the West Bank during the first half of 2026, the commission said, describing this as evidence of a shift from expanding existing settlements to creating new ones and reshaping the colonial map.
Khaldoun al-Barghouti, an analyst of Israeli affairs, told Al-Jazeera that the flag deployment is meant to establish a visual and psychological Israeli presence on Palestinian land. It reflects rhetoric from Israeli settlement leaders and government officials including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who recently stated he had built 104 settlements and 160 outposts, al-Barghouti said.
Al-Barghouti added that the control being pursued extends beyond physical construction to "searing Palestinian consciousness regarding its presence on its land." He said the strategy aims to push Palestinians from their villages to city centers while political, military and security-level pressures reinforce that direction.
