The World Food Programme said on Wednesday that two trucks carrying food supplies were struck by an airstrike outside the city of Al-Dalinj in South Kordofan state, in southern Sudan. The trucks were clearly marked with World Food Programme insignia and flags, according to the agency. The trucks were headed to Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state.
The airstrike destroyed more than 50 tons of food, the World Food Programme said, including grain, yellow split peas, vegetable oil and salt. The destroyed supplies were intended to provide food assistance to about 5,800 people for one month, the agency stated.
The World Food Programme did not identify who carried out the attack. The agency said it has recorded eight airstrikes that damaged its facilities and disrupted operations since the start of the year.
Sudan has been at war between the military and the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group, since April 2023. The three states of the Kordofan region have seen fighting between the two sides since October 2023, and fighting has killed tens of thousands and displaced about 13 million people, according to United Nations and international estimates.
The United Nations said on August 24 that 1,100 civilians were killed by drone attacks in Sudan between January and June this year. Sudanese authorities and human rights organizations have accused the Rapid Support Forces of targeting civilian infrastructure; the group does not typically comment on the accusations and says it works to protect civilians.
