New Regency has taken international distribution rights outside Spain to "Genesis," a six-part drama produced by Catalan broadcaster 3Cat about Ferran Adrià, the chef who transformed El Bulli into an influential haute-cuisine restaurant. The series will premiere its first two episodes at the San Sebastián Film Festival on September 21, the same day it launches on TV3 and the 3Cat streaming platform.
Netflix previously announced it will carry "Genesis" in Spain and in Europe, Latin America and the United States. Under the distribution agreement, New Regency holds first-window rights in territories outside Netflix's deal and controls second-window distribution in Netflix territories after an exclusivity period expires.
The company will present "Genesis" to international buyers at Mipcom in October. New Regency recently expanded its international sales operation to act as an independent sales agent for outside producers and projects.
"Genesis" is produced by 3Cat with Barcelona-based Minoria Absoluta and Fishcorb Media. The six-episode series traces the period in which Adrià, alongside Juli Soler and Albert Adrià, developed El Bulli on Catalonia's Cala Montjoi coast into one of the most influential institutions in international haute cuisine. The drama spans two timelines: one follows a young Adrià arriving at El Bulli in the 1980s, while the other tells a fictional story of a retired food critic who returns from the United States and attempts to reopen a family restaurant.
Adrià and the El Bulli Foundation were directly involved in the production, which recreated more than 70 original dishes for filming with former members of El Bulli's kitchen team. Miquel Fernández plays Adrià, with a cast including Ivan Massagué, Mónica López, Carlos Cuevas, Pere Arquillué, Mario Gas and Joana Vilapuig.
