In the Esplanāde, one of Riga's central parks, a bare tree stands surrounded by greenery but distinguished by scores of small wooden birdhouses attached to its trunk and branches. The boxes are painted in greens, yellows, reds, pinks and natural tones, creating a dense arrangement that can resemble an unusual lighting installation from a distance. Closer inspection reveals circular entrance holes identifying them as nesting boxes for cavity-nesting birds.

Riga's park managers maintain, repair and install birdhouses throughout the city's parks to provide nesting places for birds that breed in holes and enclosed spaces. The particular tree in the Esplanāde has been photographed and documented since at least 2022, according to available records. The concentration of boxes is unusually high compared to other trees in the park.

Publicly available official information does not establish who originally created the installation, when it first appeared, or how many of its boxes are currently occupied by nesting birds. The origins and purpose of the specific arrangement remain undocumented in records held by park authorities.
