Norway seized a Russian ship in the Arctic Sea on behalf of Naftogaz, Ukraine's state energy company, which holds a $4.22 billion compensation award against Russia. The seizure aims to enforce the payment, which stems from Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its subsequent takeover of Naftogaz's assets on the peninsula.

An international arbitration tribunal ruled in favor of Naftogaz's claim, finding that Russia's actions constituted unlawful expropriation. Russia has not paid the award and does not recognize the tribunal's jurisdiction.

The Arctic seizure represents an effort to collect on the judgment by targeting Russian assets in international waters accessible to Norwegian enforcement action. Norway and Russia share maritime boundaries in the Barents Sea, making Norwegian ports and territorial waters a potential point of leverage.
