Tunisia's Court of Cassation, the country's highest court of appeal, will hear arguments on September 3 in a case involving the convictions of 34 opposition figures. The figures were prosecuted in what prosecutors called a conspiracy case.
According to Amnesty International, the defendants were convicted on charges related to their political opposition activities. Sara Hashash, Amnesty's deputy regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, said the court hearing offers an opportunity to overturn what the organization characterized as a travesty of justice.
The September 3 hearing marks the final stage of appeal available to the defendants in the Tunisian court system. The case has drawn international scrutiny from human rights organizations monitoring judicial proceedings in Tunisia.
