The European Court of Human Rights has removed 879 applications against Russia from its case list, according to a decision by the Strasbourg-based tribunal. The court cited insufficient resources for examination and the applications' limited importance to the development of case law.

Amnesty International said the decision would deny complainants access to truth, justice and reparations. Marie Struthers, the rights group's director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, called for the ruling to be reversed.

The European Court of Human Rights is the continent's highest human rights tribunal, adjudicating complaints from countries across Europe and Central Asia that have ratified the European Convention on Human Rights.
